Bias Beneath the Surface in Large Language Models

The rapid integration and deployment of Large Language Models (LLMs) far outpace research aimed at understanding their impacts on human populations. For autistic people specifically, these systems are increasingly used to support socially and cognitively demanding tasks, including drafting workplace emails, preparing for interpersonal interactions, organizing daily activities, and supporting emotional well-being. This gap highlights the need for human-centered methods that examine not only how LLMs operate, but also the underlying perspectives they reflect about autistic people. In this talk, I present two studies that use distinct methodological approaches to examine these underlying perspectives. Together, these studies provide practical tools and conceptual clarity for more inclusive and responsible LLM design for autistic users, with implications for other populations as well.
