The General Relativity of Privacy: From Spacetime to Contextime

In this seminar, taking cues from Einstein’s theory of general relativity, Alashoor will introduce the “General Relativity of Privacy,” offering a new way to see privacy today. He will touch on foundational terms in the multidisciplinary domain of privacy, starting with the basic principles of privacy and security, and concluding with an exploration of data practices and their implications at the individual, organizational, and country level. Building on this foundation, he will draw from several studies to share empirical findings that spotlight privacy manipulation techniques influencing decisions to share or protect personal data.

These techniques might not only reveal personal information assets, but they could also, directly or indirectly, expose organizational information assets, posing significant cybersecurity risks across various levels. By the end of the seminar, attendees will be equipped with valuable knowledge and soft skills, such as privacy awareness, that will aid them in making informed privacy decisions, thereby helping to mitigate potential cybersecurity risks

Tawfiq Alashoor is an Assistant Professor at IESE Business School, University of Navarra (Spain). Alashoor is a researcher, educator, and consultant with more than 12 years of experience in the cybersecurity, IT, and banking industry. He holds B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM, Saudi Arabia), Penn State University (U.S.), and Georgia State University (U.S.), respectively. He has completed a postdoc program at the University of Notre Dame (U.S.) and has taught managerial cybersecurity at KFUPM, University of Notre Dame, and Copenhagen Business School to MBA and undergraduate students.

Alashoor’s main research focuses on privacy decision making and cybersecurity. His research has been published in globally recognized peer-reviewed journals and conferences, such as Information Systems Research and Academy of Management. He received several academic awards, and he serves as a reviewer for several FT50 journals including other editorial roles in the privacy research community. “It is seriously time for privacy education, training, and awareness (PETA) programs” is the title of his recent book chapter.

Alashoor is a Co-founder and the Publications Director at the Saudi Association for Information Systems (AIS) and a member of the AIS Special Interest Group on Information Security and Privacy. Alashoor’s work has been featured in the media and industry reports, and he has been a guest on several podcasts.
