Xing Named Institute of Mathematical Statistics Fellow Tuesday, May 23, 2023 - by Adam Kohlhaas Eric Xing has been named a 2023 Institute of Mathematical Statistics fellow. Eric Xing, a professor in the Machine Learning Department, Computer Science Department and Language Technologies Institute, has been named a 2023 Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS) fellow. The IMS supports the development, dissemination and application of statistics and probability, and its fellow designation has been a significant honor for more than 85 years. Each fellow has demonstrated distinction in research in statistics or probability, or leadership skills that has profoundly influenced the field. With over 4,700 members worldwide, approximately 10% of their members have been chosen for fellowship. Xing is one of 27 honored this year for his pioneering contributions to statistics and machine learning research, entrepreneurship in artificial intelligence, and leadership in AI education. Through his work, Xing is building a rigorous mathematical foundation for AI models, algorithms and systems, which are critical for pursuing explainable and trustworthy AI. All newly elected fellows will be honored at the IMS Presidential Address and Awards Ceremony at the Joint Statistical Meetings in Aug. 5–10, in Toronto. For more information, visit the IMS website.
