CSD Ph.D. Student Named DOE Computational Science Fellow Friday, May 16, 2025 - by Adam Kohlhaas CSD Ph.D. student Stephen Huan has received a Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship for the 2025–26 academic year.Stephen Huan, a doctoral student in the Computer Science Department at Carnegie Mellon University, has been awarded a Department of Energy (DOE) Computational Science Graduate Fellowship for the 2025–26 academic year.Huan is one of 30 students nationwide selected for the fellowship, which supports researchers applying high-performance computing to problems in science and engineering. His work centers on machine learning, statistics and applied mathematics, with a focus on efficient algorithms for generative modeling, sampling and statistical inference. He is advised by Andrej Risteski, an assistant professor in CMU's Machine Learning Department. Before joining CMU, Huan earned his undergraduate degree from Georgia Tech, where he worked on computational inference with Assistant Professor Florian Schäfer.Funded by the DOE's Office of Science and the National Nuclear Security Administration, the fellowship includes full tuition, an annual stipend and a practicum at a national laboratory. Fellows are selected for their academic excellence and potential to advance the use of computing in key research areas, including energy, national security and emerging technologies. For more information, visit the U.S. Department of Energy website.Media ContactAaron Aupperlee | 412-268-9068 | aaupperlee@cmu.edu
