About our Honorees

►  Maria Florina (Nina) Balcan   Cadence Design Systems Professor of Computer Science
Maria Florina (Nina) Balcan received her Ph.D. in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University in 2008. She was a postdoctoral fellow at Microsoft Research New England for a year and an assistant professor at Georgia Institute of Technology before joining the CMU faculty in 2014. She holds joint appointments in the machine learning and computer science departments.

Her main research interests include machine learning, theoretical computer science and algorithmic game theory and helped introduce general techniques to put modern learning paradigms on solid theoretical foundations. She advanced the direction of design and analysis of algorithms by providing both models of realistic (non-worst case) instances and general techniques for analyzing data-driven algorithms.

Dr. Balcan is a Sloan Fellow, a Microsoft Research New Faculty Fellow and a Kavli Fellow. She has received a NSF CAREER award, the ACM Grace Murray Hopper Award, the CMU SCS Distinguished Dissertation Award and several best paper awards. She has held several leadership positions including program co-chair for the Conference on Learning Theory (COLT) 2014, the International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML) 2016 and Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS) 2020; general chair for the International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML) 2021; workshop and tutorial co-chair for the Foundations of Computer Science (FOCS) conference in 2019 and 2020; board member of the International Machine Learning Society; and co-organizer of the Simons Semester on Foundations of Machine Learning in 2017.

►  Vyas Sekar    Tan Family Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering
Vyas Sekar is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, and is affiliated with the CyLab Security and Privacy Institute. His research is in the area of networking, security and systems. He is a member of CyLab, where he co-directs the IoT@Cylab initiative. His research spans the areas of data-driven networking, software-defined network security, IoT security, network telemetry and network verification. He received a B.Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras where he was awarded the President of India Gold Medal, and a Ph.D from Carnegie Mellon University.

He is the recipient of the NSF CAREER award, the ACM SIGCOMM Rising Star Award and the Angel Jordan Career Development Professorship in Electrical and Computer Engineering. His work has received best paper awards at ACM Sigcomm, ACM CoNext and ACM Multimedia; the NSA Science of Security prize; the CSAW Applied Security Research Prize; and IRTF Applied Networking Research Prize. His work has also been fast-tracked and invited for publication in the Communications of the ACM and the IEEE Transactions on Networking, and shortlisted as a best paper at ACM Conext and ACM IMC. He has published papers in top tier networking/systems/security conferences such as SIGCOMM, NSDI, IEEE Security and Privacy, SIGMETRICS, IMC and CoNext — more than 100 peer-reviewed papers overall. He has served on numerous program committees including SIGCOMM, NSDI, IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy, ACM CCS, ACM Internet Measurement Conference, USENIX Security and NDSS. He has also been involved in organizing (as general or technical program chair) for ACM IMC, ACM SIGCOMM, ACM CoNext, USENIX NSDI and ACM Hotnets, among others.
